I just had to pass this one on-
I read the story on Reuters about the death-row inmate who is pregnant after spending a year in solitary. I'm pretty sure it's NOT the second coming. Guess her guards are gonna be in BIG trouble-nothing to do but check DNA now.
That story is interesting/disturbing on several levels. From trivial to serious:
A Billion dong sounds like a lot until you see the 63,000 dollars part. Okay, a significant amount. Makes you wonder a bit about the economy though...
Hmmm...they're investigating 'how' she got pregnant. I think the question might be who rather than how, but that's quibbling. Did she have a sympathetic guard who wanted to help her in her misery and/or give her a chance at a longer life?? Perhaps she promised him half a billion dong.
Disturbing: the death sentence for anything over 600 grams. The death sentence. I'm not pro narcotics-trafficking by any means, but there is something wrong with this picture.
It SOUNDS really wrong, except I did a little research on heroin values. From what I see, the street value is inbetween 1000 and 1500 PER GRAM in the US.
The thing that's really wrong is that they don't sentence dealers to death in this country. 600 grams of heroin can ruin a lot of lives.
Hi Bets This is totally off topic but I wanted to touch base with you. I forwarded my 2 previous emails to the address you gave me at Elann but they were returned undeliverable. When I finally get through to you, I will have lots to say. I think you know the topic....right? It's a nice topic. Evelyn

sorry that's just crazy.
I can tell them how it happened...
I hope they let her give birth, at least, because, after all, the baby didn't do anything...
